Murmu's statement was read out by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh. "The Constitution makers envisaged a nation that would be run by democratically-elected representatives of the people of India... I am deeply satisfied the symbol of this faith in Parliament - the prime minister of India - is inaugurating this Parliament," the President said. She added that she was confident the new Parliament will "strengthen the spirit of unity and pride in the nation".
